Basic Mediation Training

Basic Mediation Training

The Mediation Program is comprehensive in that it offers a week long basic mediation training course held annually on campus in September. The basic mediation training is a highly interactive process which introduces the participants to the concepts and skills relative to the practice of mediation.

The role plays are relevant to conflicts that occur within academic culture. Participants are provided with a training manual, and supplemental materials. A continental breakfast, a catered lunch and light snacks are served daily.

Upon successful completion of the 32 hours of training, participants will receive a certificate and be certified by the state of California per the California Dispute Resolution Act of 1986. State certification has been made possible by the Mediation Program's partnership with the Orange County Human Relations Commission.

The basic mediation training has a dual purpose:

  • To provide students, faculty, staff and administrators with practical skills to resolve or manage conflict.
  • To provide participants with on-going professional development.

All students, faculty, staff and administrators of the university and medical center communities are eligible to apply and participate. The basic mediation training is designed to accommodate 35-40 participants.

Interested applicants are encouraged to apply and interview for a seat in the training program. The selection process has been designed to select an applicant pool that is widely representative of the university and medical center community.
